Aquaponics as Retirement Hobby?

When retirement comes, many people seek activities which do not require too much effort. Aquaponic gardening will keep you occupied for a while, yet without getting over your entire day.
In addition to that it will spare them of going to the market to buy veggies, it will help you save some money and at the same time will not require them too much effort. If you place the system at your waist level you will not need to bend or stretch, which will make this activity far more pleasant.


What is a Aquaponic System?
Aquaponics is the conjunction of two other type of product raising methods…
- Aquaculture, the raising of fish in water, and
- Hydroponics, the raising of plants in water.
These two type of product raising were combined since both products are raised in water, with one producing waste and depositing it in the water (the fish), and the other needs nutrients which it extracts from the water (the plants).

The Aquaponic principle:

  1. Fish are raised in the water, you feed them what their species needs to eat. As the fish eat and grow they produce waste and use up the oxygen in the water.
  2. A bacteria culture that exists in a balanced aquatic system breaks down the fish waste into basic nutrient elements and minerals, turning the water into a nutrient rich environment for plants
  3. The nutrient water in pulled into a submersible pump, which would ideally be plugged into a small solar cell and battery for constant power. (another great idea for a hobby - solar power systems!)
  4. The nutrient water is then gravity fed down into irrigation line that runs along the surface of the grow-beds
  5. The nutrient water then flows down through the grow-beds which has plants planted in a growing medium for example light weight silica rock. 
  6. As the nutrient water passes through the grow-bed, the plants pick up the nutrients they need, which effectively filters the nutrients out of the water.
  7. The water is gravity drained back into the fish water from a height that allows the water to churn when it hits the pond surface thus refreshing the pond and providing the fish with oxygenated water

Sounds not so complicated - right? The basic thing you will need to know about this system is that it combines the principles of aquaculture with those of hydroponic gardening, thus resulting a new and highly effective way of growing plants and fish at the same time. With a tank of no more than 20 square feet and some netted pots you will be able to grow enough plants to supply your entire family and sometimes even gift some to your neighbors.

Gardening with Fish?
Because this system heavily relies on fishes (they are the ones providing the food for the plants), you will need to take good care of them in order for the system to give proper results. This means that you will need to make sure that the water has the appropriate temperature, PH level, light as well as the necessary amount of oxygen to accommodate the fish in god conditions. Basically, monitoring the water and feeding the fish is all that you will have to do in order to grow plants in the aquaponic garden. It is quite simple and the results are spectacular.

Gardening without efforts
The great thing about this type of gardening is that you will not need to bend to take care of the plants. Placing the fish tank and the netting pots at the waist level will make all activities you need to do in order to take care of the plants and fish easy as a children’s game. You can say goodbye to digging, bending and stretching to reach as larger surface, and crawling on your knees to take the weeds out of the ground. You will have everything you need at your arms’ reach.
The aquaponic system is suitable for any age as well as for people with any type of activity. It requires little time and it gives great results. As long as you take good care of your fish, your plants will grow bigger and bigger, will develop normally and at the end you will harvest the best veggies you have ever tasted!

Overweight? How to loose weight?

Do you know this situation? You get up in the morning, go to the bathroom and there it is - the enemy - the scale!
Yesterday you have been to a shop and saw this beautiful dress, you tried but it couldn't fit - the sales girl told you "sorry we don't have it any larger".
This sentence really hurts - because what she is really saying is "your are OVERWEIGHT - you should loose weight!"

Why AM I OVERWEIGHT?

Our weight is determined by the amount of energy that we take in as food and the amount of energy we expend in the activities of our day.  It is as simple as that.
Energy is measured in calories. If your weight remains constant, you are probably taking in the same amount of calories you burn each day. If you're slowly gaining weight over time, it is likely that your caloric intake is greater than the number of calories you burn through your daily activities.
When you are over 50, and you are overweight, one of the first things we have to consider is to show you how to lose weight!

Biological facts - Metabolism facts

For some people, due to genetic (inherited) factors or other conditions, the resting metabolic rate (BMR) can be slightly higher or lower than average. Our weight also plays a role in determining how many calories we burn at rest -- more calories are required to maintain your body in its present state, the greater your body weight. A 100-pound person requires less energy (food) to maintain body weight than a person who weighs 200 pounds.

Whether you are trying to lose 5 pounds or more than 50, the same simple laws of physics determine whether or not you will lose weight and how fast your weight loss will occur.

Over all these years you probably have already tried so many different things, so many different diets. Some of them did work for a while, some Diets were simply a waste of money.

The reason you cannot lose weight by starving yourself (using a low calorie diet) is because your metabolism will detect any major drop in calories and it will then ADJUST ITSELF by burning fewer calories each day. 

For example:
If you begin eating 2,500 calories per day then your metabolism will adjust itself so that your body begins burning 2,500 calories per day.

If you try to starve yourself by suddenly eating 1,000 calories per day then your metabolism will again ADJUST ITSELF so that your body begins to burn only 1,000 calories per day.  That's why you have failed in your past dieting attempts, that's why you always seem to fail when you try and starve yourself.
 
Now you know the reason why you can eat 1,000 calories per day and not lose any weight while your friends can eat 2,500 calories per day and not gain any weight.
 


Low carb diets have certainly become popular in recent years, but such diets often leave you feeling miserable each day (since they drain most of your energy and can leave you feeling quite awful each day).

Check out these facts...

Did you know that several popular low carb diets are so strict that you cannot even eat a large apple during the first couple weeks?    It's true.

Also, many low carb diets won't even let you enjoy a 'normal' restaurant meal (ordered without any carb restrictions) for many months after you begin.

Therefore, low carb diest can leave you feeling MISERABLE each day, which is not the answer


Also, virtually every person in today's society is buying mostly "low fat" or "non fat" food at the grocery store, everybody is conscious of the "fat grams" inside the food they buy.  However, people are getting fatter than ever by doing this and people are not losing weight by switching to the "low fat lifestyle".

How to make this blog more popular?

Like with everything new it is always a question " how will the people know about?" Because one thing is clear the best helping or advisory site is useless if nobody knows about it or cannot find it. So I was searching around the internet and found several options:
  1. Write the post and wait until the major search engines will find it
    Not really a good option unless you have endless time
  2. Use advertising programs like adsense and many more on the market
    Depending on your products, this might be quite expensive
  3. Participate in forums and post content there
    Works to certain extend - the effect will be the search engines will find your post and eventually some traffic comes to you page
  4. Pay an external consultant to do the "magic"
No matter what you do - there is no magic. I did the hard work and was searching for other alternatives and found one in the help sections of blogger.com. In this post the guy describes several option how to increase the traffic to your site. One of the mentioned alternatives is a so called traffic exchange program called "blog explosion.

50 plus is the beginning of a new life

Getting past the early years has given you a wealth of experience, wisdom….AND you have learned that having fun is the golden key...health, fitness, exercise all these contribute to the better AND new life over 50. 

Listen to your inner voice .....
My volume just wasn't turned up high enough, or my hearing wasn't that sharp. I started listening to that "little voice" that told me what excited, and interested me. When I turned up the volume, and had my hearing checked, the sound was incredible!



Take time for adventure and exploration .....
With that extra time, and income we have now acquired, take the time to explore new possibilities. Make new choices...what brings the greatest joy and pleasure? What kind of lifestyle are you living? 



Look for new and exciting opportunities .....
If there is something new that you have always wanted to do (golf, tennis, scuba diving) go for it...you only live once.
I waited a long time to do the things that brought pure joy into my life. I should have listened to that "little inner voice"...JUST DO IT!



Feel the excitement .....
Certain things will happen in our lives to reassure us that we are on the right road (again...back to the little voice...listen to it!) We start to feel excited and passionate about the choices we are making...it just feels right!
